A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
