The Princess of Wales's Traditional Yuletide Musical Celebration Honours Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The sizable congregation will hear a selection of carols, music and readings from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The theme of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the concert.
A Steady Comeback
The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Musical Talent and Access
Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to widen access to music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the charity, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at tonight's service.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.
A Sisterly Duo
Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for community pantries.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
This annual carol service will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
